Sante Fe Trail Scenic Byway |
This 188 mile historic trail was used extensively from the 1820's to the 1870's as the major trade route to the southern Rocky Mountains. The discerning eye can still see the wagon ruts carved into the plains by thousands of immigrants to the old west. Along the way be sure to visit Bent's Old Fort National Historic Site, fur trading post. Native Americans and Mountain Men alike traded at this outpost on the Arkansas River. This natural route following the river marked the Sante Fe Trail as the link to the expansion of the old west. Don't miss the experience of Bent's Old Fort National Historic Site, the Comanche National Grasslands, and the many fruit and vegetable vendors in this rich agricultural area.
