Pawnee Pioneer Trails Scenic Byway |
The spirit of old west adventure becons you from every horizon. This 125 mile journey leads one into visions of wagon trains and cattle drives. Cheyenne, Sioux, and Arapahoe indians frequented the area and used it as a winter camping ground. Appearing as mighty stone trunks, Pawnee Buttes jut 250' into the clear high plains sky. This landmark guided native americans and immegrants alike. Today the high plains abound with coyotes, red fox, prairie dogs and ferrets, pronghorn antelope, and hundreds of bird species migrate on this major flyway.
