Loveland, founded in 1877, was named after the president of the Colorado Central Railroad, W. A. H. Loveland. The town started as an agricultural community but soon became an important shipping point for stock and lumber. Great Western Sugar opened its first sugar plant in 1901 in Loveland. The city has gained worldwide recognition as the "Sweetheart City" with its valentine remailing program.
