Police Department 170 MacGregor Ave 586-4000 Estes Park, founded in the early 1860's, was named after the man who discovered the valley, Joel Estes. The community became a boom town as mountain climbing increased in popularity in the area. Recreation would continue to be a major force. In 1915 the Rocky Mountain National Park was created to help preserve the area's beauty.
